ABINGDON, Va. – Win a free mammogram. Enjoy a free chair massage. Get free health screenings. Shop for jewelry and learn about ways women can get and stay healthy at the seventh annual Celebrate Women event hosted by Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH) on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon.
The free event, designed to raise awareness about breast cancer and healthy lifestyles for women and their loved ones, offers health screenings for high blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, oral cancer, sleep apnea and others. Education sessions led by JMH physicians discuss topics such as surgery for breast cancer patients and radiation therapy.
“We started the Celebrate Women event in 2006 to encourage women to get mammograms,” said Terry Smith, director of oncology services at JMH. “But it’s grown to focus on all issues of women’s health—cancer and prevention, healthy lifestyle choices and other needs women have.” Vendors and free food add to the atmosphere of celebration.
Health screenings are the most popular offering among the 500 to 600 people who usually attend Celebrate Women, according to Smith. Flu vaccines also will be available along with a drawing for 25 free mammograms donated by JMH.
